I can't tell you how many of my clients DESPERATELY need to have inpatient hospitalization, but they are limited to a "one-day" stay, basically. It has made me so angry that people who have serious chemical deficiencies are ignored - suicide is just as dangerous as a heart attack. This is also a big day for us therapists - it will begin, perhaps, to change the medical field's perception of us (we are often approached by medical doctors with a mixture of suspicion, disrespect and unbelief). This will make my job significantly easier to help those in need. I think it's disgusting how the medical profession and insurance have so long held the stigma against mental health problems. I think we trully are progressing and I hope to see a world where people aren't afraid to ask the big questions and seek help. We don't live in an independent world. We live in an interdependent one.On a side note, there was research where in a tribe of baboons all of the alpha males and aggressive monkeys died out because they ate tainted food. In that tribe they now do not tolerate such aggressive behaviors like found in other tribes. I think this speaks clearly to how "nurture" vs "nature" play out in the real world.
